1936 Austin 12/4 Ascot

This is one of those wonderful finds showcasing originality, class, quality and history. AYG 176 was first registered in April 1936, supplied new to a Mr George Anderson of Kelso, Scottish Borders. The original supplier dealer plate is still present inside the car confirming Mr R Fish & Sons, Motor Engineers of Kelso supplied the car new. The car comes with some wonderful history with lots of photographs, one of the Austin with the proprietor of the Garage who supplied the car back in 1936. Remarkably, the same family owned this car from new until the early 2000’s and during the cars early life it was used as Mr Anderson’s every day car. By the 1960’s, the car was laid up in completely original condition.

During the 1970's the owner decided to restore the Austin and from the records and photographs with the car we can see it was taken to the very highest of standards whilst still retaining its wonderful original leather upholstery. It's clear that from owning the car from new, real passion went into the restoration and the result of the renovation was a multi show winning example. The Austin was a regular ‘concours' show winner and pictures of multiple awards and trophies next to the car are present in the history file. During the 1980's the car attended and won The Borders Vintage Automobile Club Concours d'Elegance several times and nine individual trophies can be seen in one of the many old photographs with the car. The Austin was driven to events all over the North and by the mid to late 1980's the Austin was handed down from the cars only owner to his daughter and son in law, also in Kelso.

In 2007 the original owner's daughter and son in law decided to sell the Austin after more than 70 years in the family. With its new owner the Austin was treated to an engine rebuild (invoice with the file), new carpets, the original leather was carefully treated, some paintwork detailing carried out and a new exhaust system fitted. AYG 176 was then on the show circuit in South Yorkshire but in 2016 after nine years the elderly owner decided to part with the car. In true show quality, collector's car condition, the Austin was sold to a meticulous, prominent Yorkshire based collector who has kept the car on display in his multi car collection motor house. The Austin has been kept in impeccable condition and used just several times over the past three years. The car has arrived with us in beautiful condition and is of the very best pre-war Austin's we have come across. The bodywork is excellent, the paintwork is of a very high standard, as is chrome work, the engine bay and the interior is just wonderful retaining so much originality. The car is absolutely right in every respect. The rebuilt engine is in excellent order, the Austin is very strong and drives very well indeed. This very special car has wonderful provenance and history, still retains its original registration mark, original top quality leather and comes with a huge amount of documentation to include original tax discs back to the 1930's, MOT's dating back decades, invoices for maintenance and servicing, pages and pages of previous ownership correspondence and of course the wonderful photographs that show what a loved car this really has been.
