Our UK RHD Home Market Austin Healey ‘Frogeye’ Sprite MKI was built on the 2nd-3rd July 1959, finished in Cherry Red with Red trim, Black hood and was supplied new by F.G Smith (Motors) Ltd in Ilford, Essex. The Sprite was registered in Essex with the registration mark 2516 EV and having spent its early life moving around various areas of the South of England, by the early to mid 1990’s it was back where is started life in Ilford, Essex where it underwent a major 1000 hour restoration.
A detailed photographic record shows the Frogeye being stripped down to a totally bare shell, taken back to metal and then fully rebuilt. On completion of the full shell rebuild, it was prepared for painting in its original colour of Cherry Red. The shell was then then painted inside, outside and underneath and then built up with new brightwork, brand new upholstery, new weather equipment and mechanical components were either re-furbished, rebuilt or replaced as required and re-fitted to the car.
Invoices are present for much of the mechanical work including the engine rebuild. The Frogeye engine was re-bored, treated to new pistons, main, big end and thrust bearings, re-ground crankshaft, new oil pump, cam followers, new ring gear and re-faced flywheel. All the suspension was rebuilt, the braking system totally rebuilt, new steering components fitted, rear axle re-furbished and lots of new ancillaries fitted.
MOT records would suggest the Frogeye has covered relatively low mileage since its mid 1990's long term rebuild and still almost 25 years on since restoration is a delightful, lovely usable example. The car is very clean with good shut lines, a superb straight body, nice older paintwork and a lovely smart, fresh interior and engine bay. The underside is very well presented and structurally outstanding. 2516 EV drives superbly with a strong, fit engine and gearbox and handles superbly. It's a great little driver, its lots of fun and is ready to drive and enjoy. Our Frogeye comes with full weather equipment, a detailed history file including invoices, photo record, MOT's back to the mid 1980's, tax discs back to 1990 and the car still retains its original registration mark and is finished in its factory supplied colour combination.
