1950 Bedford OB Bus
The Bedford OB with it's small but robust 14'6" chassis was launched in the summer of 1939. Its modest size and lusty 3.5 litre OHV petrol engine were destined to make it a favourite amongst future country coach operators. Only 73 chassis were built before the outbreak of hostilities when production of the utilitarian wartime OWB commenced. After the war the OB with a revised body was one of the very first coaches to go back into production in 1946. Priced at around £1325 for a complete coach it was good value. Almost 13,000 OBs had been built when production ceased in the early 1950s.
Only around 100 are known to have survived. Many were converted to mobile shops and later scrapped.
Nostalgia for bygone days is sure to ensure that the great popularity of the charming Bullnosed OB endures into the next generation. Obs typically cost less than £200 a year to insure and with 'grandfather' driving privileges for pre-1997 car licence holders (up to 8 non-fare paying passengers) they represent a fun and exciting investment the whole family (and friends) can enjoy!
This particular example has been owned for many years by a dear friend of ours in South Wales. This OB has a 214 Petrol Engine, (Bedford TK era), much more powerful and economical, also the quieter 214 TK gearbox, (Original still available), brand new late model 214 Carburettor, alternator in place of original dynamo, brand new re-manufactured petrol tank with all new fuel lines, plus additional in line fuel filters.
The Bedford is absolutely on the button, ready to use and enjoy and will be supplied with class 5 MOT. The OB has been beautifully restored so bodywork and paintwork are of a lovely standard, the wonderful interior has been fully restored and has 27 seats and sunshine sliding roof. This is a wonderful collectors piece and is something very special.
