1951 Bentley MK VI Standard Steel Saloon

LXU 623 was manufactured in 1951 and supplied new by H.A Fox & Co Ltd, 3-5 Burlington Gardens, Old Bond Street, London. The Bentley MKVI Standard Steel Saloon was delivered new to Coventry Climax Engines Ltd, Widdrington Road, Works, Coventry on the 19th July 1951 for the Company Chairman Leonard Pelham Lee. Interestingly, the special instructions included the initials L.P.L to be painted on the main doors. Further special instructions included bonnet locks, silk rope pulls, loud speaker and a rear window de-mister. The Coventry Climax is a World famous race engine and the season of 1954 saw the first Coventry Climax powered cars begin winning races. Leonard Lee is an important figure in British Motoring history and the fact he owned this vehicle gives the car real provenance.

We have records of the first three owners of this Bentley up to 1960 and we know by the late 1980's the Bentley had a recorded mileage of 41,510 and was briefly on the Isle of Man. The Bentley was then sold to the then, General Secretary of the RREC who it stayed with until selling to the last owner in 1997. We know from the history file that the car was purchased in a poor state having spent many years off the road. LXU 623 was back on the road by 2002 and was treated to a re-trimmed leather upholstery and various mechanical and re-commissioning work. In 2007 the Bentley was awarded a certificate of participation in the RREC fiftieth anniversary celebrations.

Since 2002 the Bentley has covered 8000 miles but has not been used for the past six months. The car has arrived in good useable condition with a strong engine holding very good oil pressure. The engine runs very well and is oil and water tight. On inspection, there is no water in the oil and the engine does not overheat. The four speed manual gearbox is lovely to use and the car drives well. Due to the lack of recent use, we will be servicing the brakes and fully checking the car over in our workshop. LXU 623 will be supplied with a full 12 months MOT and will be ready for regular use.

The Bentley bodywork is solid and panels are very straight. The paintwork has aged and whilst isn't of a top class standard, it is bright presentable and has a very honest, unmolested feel. The bumpers have been re-chromed at some point in recent years and the grill/shell is in excellent order. The upholstery has good quality re-trimmed leather seats and door cards, woodwork has aged but is presentable and carpets are clean. The Bentley does have a working sunroof. LXU 623 is currently being evaluated in our workshop and will be carrying out some cosmetic improvements if necessary. Please phone for more details.
