1957 Bentley S1 Continental Flying Spur

We are delighted to offer this magnificent motor car onto the market. This very special S Series Continental with H.J Mulliner coachbuilt body is the first variant of its type and is finished in a beautiful colour of Seychelles Blue with Blue leather upholstery. Interestingly, although the car now is equipped with an automatic transmission, it did leave the factory with a manual gearbox and its believed only four examples in the S1 Continental Flying Spur range were ever built with this option. We can confirm also that this 1 of just 19 ‘D’ Series Flying Spur’s in a total of 167 RHD examples built to Design number 7443.

603 HYP was registered new on the 7th December 1957 and was supplied in London W1 to the Chairman of a private bank, Brown, Shipley & Co. The Bentley was purchased by Mr Angus MacKinnon Esq as a present for his wife, housed at their Hampshire based property. The Bentley six-light sports saloon was later sold on the 28th October 1960 to Berkley Square Garages, Berkley Square, London W1. The Rolls Royce Bentley dealership supplied the car to Adams & Adams Ltd of New Malden, Surrey two years later. 603 HYP changed hands again in 1964, this time spending 19 years with one owner before selling the car to a South Devon based Doctor. The Bentley spent thirty years with its Doctor owner, and it was during this long-term ownership period the car was subject of some major re-furbishment work.

This S1 Continental was subject of a bare metal re-paint that today still looks exceptional. The car was also completely re-chromed and the interior treated to a replacement Beige West of England headlining and rebuilt period radio. Mechanically the car was treated to rebuilt carburetors and various replacement ignition items.  After 30 years of ownership, in 2013 the Bentley and shortly after £18,500 was spent taking the vehicle to an exceptionally high standard. The woodwork was restored and re-veneered, the engine bay superbly detailed, the windscreen and tyres replaced and a new stainless-steel exhaust system fitted. In 2015 the Bentley was sold to the most recent owner, a collector based between York and Harrogate and a further £19000 has been spent on the car taking expenditure to almost £40,000 since 2013. Work includes new brake linings, wheel cylinders, rebuilt master cylinder, brake hoses, master cylinder metal feed pipe, track rod end rubber boots, both offside and nearside king pin kits, new suspension bump stops, new oil fed fulcrum blocks, four outer bearing lower wishbone blocks, anti-roll bar kits and bushes, upper wishbone bearing mount blocks and rebuilt power steering system.

Having had a recent suspension and steering rebuild, it's no surprise the Bentley drives beautifully. It has driven over to us faultlessly with a wonderfully smooth, quiet engine and lovely gearbox. The car is in excellent order and the presentation of the vehicle matches the quality of the car on the road. The bodywork and paint quality are excellent, the chassis superb and with many underside components treated to detailing in 2016 it really is impressive. The upholstery is top class with gleaming woodwork, beautiful leather work and excellent luxury carpets and a perfect headlining. This is most certainly a car for the discerning buyer and is a true collectors piece that still retains its original engine. The Bentley comes with its original factory records, invoices detailing all listed work, handbook and various MOT certificates showing gentle use over recent years.
