We are delighted to offer this exceptionally rare motor car onto the market. This stunning Bristol 408 is one of only sixteen MKII 408s built and records show less than five MKII examples have survived. This actual car is the penultimate MKII built before production transferred to the 409 model so this really is a very special car with a huge level of provenance that will interest collectors. Furthermore, the Bristol is still finished in its correct Regal Red with Elephant Grey hide which was in fact Beige. The Bristol was first registered on 9th November 1965 and dispatched from the works at Filton to Anthony Crook Motors of Hersham who supplied the car to its first owner in London.
From the Bristol Owners Club and comprehensive history file we have a list of former owners since the car was built but it was in 1989 where the car changed hands in need of restoration. The Bristol was in Bournemouth from 1989 to 1990 but only ten months into ownership the Bristol was sold to a published author of classic car books in London in ‘part finished' form. Seven years later, the Bristol changed hands again and at this point the car was transported to a recommended restorer in Middlesex who began working on the car immediately. In the region of £12,000 was spent in getting the Bristol back on the road from its part finished state and a further £4,000 plus was spent over the next four years as the car began to do some light mileage.
VEW 408 comes with a huge history file with a separate photo album showing various stages of the major restoration. The car had been re-painted Blue back in the 1970's so the 1997 rebuild was the perfect opportunity to put the car back to original specification. The photos clearly show a major body restoration, engine removal and rebuild, extensive interior work, brightwork re-plating and a full mechanical overhaul. Since restoration the Bristol has covered 19,000 miles and has been used to participating in various classic car events. When first coming to us early in 2016 it was driven here in the region of 200 faultless miles and put through our workshop for preparation. The Bristol was fully serviced, exhaust mounting rubbers replaced, rocker cover gaskets replaced, brakes adjusted and the radiator re-cored. On the day of marketing the car it was sold to one of our long term regular customers in Leicestershire who likes to change his classics regularly, part exchanging a first class Rolls Royce MPW. We then sold the car immediatley once again and over the summer the Bristol has covered several hundred faultless miles. The Bristol has toured superbly from Worcestershire over to Wales and back, and has proven an enjoyable car to own, only now coming back to us to make space for another interesting classic. This is one of those fabulous car that we like to take back and we are now looking forward to supplying it for a third time, hopefully keeping it within the Classic & Sportscar Centre regular customer base!
Since selling the Bristol to two regular customers, it has covered over 500 miles and has been nicely treated to some detailing. The stunning paintwork has been treated to a good dose of Race Glaze wax followed by Zymol Carnuba wax. The interior has been carefully detailed, the lovely Reutter front seats treated to an Autoglym cleaning solution and they have come up like new. The dashboard has had the benefit of burnishing cream and all the brightwork has been nicely polished. A GRRC sticker has been added to the windscreen along with a period tax disc and an expensive set of lambs wool over rugs have been fitted. The original ‘Anthony Crook Motors' dealer sill plates have been removed, polished and re-fitted and a period GB plate along with polished digit Ace Peaked Plates fitted. The car has been beautifully prepared for the upcoming motoring events but as so often the case, we have tempted our regular customer into allowing us to have the car back. VEW 408 looks the part with its stunning straight bodywork, lovely aged paintwork, fabulous interior with working Tudor Webasto sunroof and mechanically the car is on the button, performing superbly and is ready to enjoy.
