VWV 789 was manufactured on the 14th April 1960, originally distributed by Torquay Motors in Devon and was first registered on the 3rd May 1960. We know from the original ‘buff’ logbook the Daimler Dart was owned and registered to a Mr Ball of Whitestone Garage near Exeter, a business that still exists today. In August 1968 the Daimler sold to private owner in Ebford, Exeter and it changed hands a year later staying within the same City. In 1970 the owner moved to Southampton, then Bognor Regis taking the car with him and in 1972 after two years of ownership and several house moves, he sold the car and to a gentleman in Wiltshire. Having had over 20 years in the South of England, the car finally moved north to Huddersfield, West Yorkshire where it has been ever since. The last owner purchased the car in 1986 and has cherished it for the past 32 years having bought the car in need of major work.
The car was reported to be in poor condition on initial purchase in 1986 although the engine had been rebuilt with its previous owner. Invoices throughout the late 1980's, 1990's and 2000's are present in the detailed, comprehensive history. The car was to be a usable, rolling restoration and a fascinating log details every new part since 1987. Daimler and Lanchester restorers Beales Engineering in Leeds rebuilt the gearbox, supplied a new wiring loom, all new brake discs and a new steering wheel. The car was re-trimmed in Dark Red hide by a trimming company still in Huddersfield today, the body was restored and painted during the 1990's and again in 2006, wheels have been shot blasted, re-chroming carried out and throughout the 30 years plus, almost all ancillaries have been re-furbished or replaced. In more recent years and within the past 10,000 miles, expenditure includes a stainless steel exhaust system, new aluminium fuel tank, water pump, further major engine work, new clutch, electronic ignition, replaced rear axle, all nickel brake and clutch pipes and various other new components.
VWV 789 presents superbly with an excellent straight bodyshell with a gleaming high quality paint finish. The chrome work throughout is exceptional having been recently re-plated. The Dark Red leather upholstery is beautiful with great patina after 25 years and gentle use since re-trim. The Dart is tremendous on the road with a fabulous smooth V8 engine that performs perfectly. Oil pressure is superb, its responsive, quick and the gearbox is first class with perfect syncormesh. Brakes are sharp and efficient; the steering is still the original system with steering box and is in very good order offering a delightful period driving experience. MOT certificates back to 1991 confirm the Daimler has covered 22,000 miles in the last 27 years and has proven totally reliable for its long-term owner. There is no doubt much care and attention has gone into this car after so many years of ownership and is now on the market for the first time in 32 years. This is a car known to the Daimler Register but has not been available since the 1980's. VWV 789X comes with a great deal of paperwork and also its original steel wheels, a hard top in need of re-furbishment and will be supplied to its next owner with a full 12 months MOT and full service.
