1972 Datsun 240Z

The Datsun 240Z was launched in 1969 and it ensured the Nissan Motor Company established itself as a major force in the GT/Sports market. The Z boasted a 2.4 litre, overhead camshaft, six cylinder engine with five speed gearbox (or three speed automatic), all round independent suspension and the car proved to be an outstanding success in the North American market and with its Albert Goertz styling, the 240Z looked very European. The Japanese GT also proved to be tough and reliable, winning the Safari Rally in 1971 and 1973.

This beautifully presented and highly original Datsun 240Z was built on the 17th December 1972 in RHD format and delivered new to Australia. The car supplied new to its first owner in Sydney and the Datsun stayed with the same family for 29 years. The car passed from father to son in 1991 and the car left family ownership in 2001 selling to a then Australian based owner who in 2005 moved to the UK and brought the car with him.

It is clear the Datsun has spent most of its life in a sunny, dry climate as the bodyshell is in excellent, original condition and is unlike so many examples that have required many body repairs over its life. The body is incredibly straight and honest, panels are in excellent order and the underbody is structurally excellent. With the exception of a re-paint in the cars original colour in 2006, some re-chroming by Derby Plating and a new set of alloy wheels, the car is externally original.  The interior is remarkably original and honest with lovely seats, door cards and headlining suggesting the recorded mileage of 85000 is correct. The engine bay is outstanding and superbly presented to a condition where it would not look out of place at shows and events.

GYY 696L is mechanically strong with a superb engine boasting factory oil pressure and exceptional performance. The five speed gearbox is a delight to use, the Datsun handles and brakes superbly and is impressive in every respect. Recent work includes a brake overhaul, re-conditioned starter motor, new windscreen and MOT records show the 240Z has covered less than 2000 miles since arriving in the UK. This is the first RHD Datsun 240Z we've had in over 20 years and with its gorgeous GT sports styling and ultra strong, reliable Japanese running gear, we will be having plenty of fun in this car before it leaves.
