This stunning Fiat 124 Spider was supplied new by Best Imports, Salinas, California and delivered new on the 22nd April 1978. The first owner was based in the city of Marina, Monterey County, California and the car was supplied with a two year/24000 mile warranty. The supplying dealer serviced the Fiat in May 1978 and again 6985 miles. We don't have any further earlier history but during the 1990's the Fiat was sold to a UK Doctor working in San Francisco. It was sold as a low mileage vehicle with little over 70,000 miles recorded from new. The Fiat was used as a daily commuter vehicle to the University of San Francisco and in 1998, the owner moved back to the UK, firstly London and more recently York and the car has stayed with the same Doctor owner since.
Being a genuine Californian car, the body is exceptional with no rust issues. The Fiat is remarkably original with the exception of a professional re-paint in its original colour. The body is excellent with superb straight panels, the paint finish stunning and the underside solid and in excellent order. The upholstery is original and very smart considering its 35 years old. The front and rear seats are excellent, the carpets nicely aged, door cards smart and the dashboard free from cracking. The hood is also in good order. Since been back in the UK, the Fiat has only covered 2000 miles taking the recorded mileage to 75,500.
The Fiat is in excellent mechanical order and has been very well maintained over recent years. We have invoices for various works to include new timing belt, cam seals, gasket set, new oil pump and new conrods and bearings. This work was carried out in California. Since being back in the UK, the Fiat has had new rear shock absorbers, new front brake discs, re-conditioned starter motor, stainless steel exhaust system, exhaust manifold, new gearbox, lower wishbones and ball joints. Recently, in 2011 the Fiat has benefitted from rebuilt brake calipers, rear brake discs and pads, rear flexi brake pipes, new road springs and repaired half shaft. As a result the Fiat is first class to drive. The engine feels fantastic with superb power, impressive acceleration and a great sound. The gearbox, being a relatively new unit is perfect and the car handles and brakes perfectly as a result of the recent expenditure. The mechanical work since arriving in the UK totals almost £5000 and we are confident to say a more honest, original yet superbly maintained car will be difficult to find.
DGK 452S is a fabulous find, such original, low ownership cars are increasingly difficult to find and this car feels absolutely right in every respect. The condition, the way it drives and what has been done to the car makes it a great buy for someone wanting to use their classic either in the UK or the Continent. The car comes with a comprehensive history file that includes original handbook and original service and warranty booklet.
