1973 Ford Escort MKI Mexico

The Ford Escort MKI was a fantastic rally car and eventually went on to become of the most successful rally cars of all time. One of the Escort's greatest victories was the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally. The MKI Escort was driven by Hannu Mikkola from Finland and this victory gave rise to the famous Ford Escort Mexico special editon road version in honour of the rally car.

This outstanding car has had an absolute fortune spent on it. The car is heavily upgraded and to restore a car to this standard and specification would cost in the region of £25,000-£30,000. We are delighted to offer this impressive motor car that will prove very expensive to replace or replicate. On arrival our Mexico has been driven over 200 miles taking the overall mileage since rebuild to almost 2,500. The car has outstanding performance that really gives a fantastic driving experience. Whether taking tight corners or accelerating up and down hill, the Mexico is a true joy to drive with lots of attention inevitable.

The Mexico has been fitted with a 1.8 Zetec dry sump engine with BDA rocker cover, Raceline RL200 cams, Raceline water rail, Throttle Bodies with DTA Management and Ashley exhaust and manifold. A Type 9 five speed gearbox with quickshift has been fitted along with RS200 quick release alloy bellhousing and 3:89:1 ratio differential. Serious money has also been spent on the suspension and brakes with 260/60 adjustable wedged Bilsteins, 175lbs C&G springs on 4 inch adjustable platforms, Tension strut kit c/w drop links and ARB World Cup Cross Member, Group 4 two piece strut top mounts and spherical bearings, Group 4 strut brace & steering coupler, adjustable in situ TCA's, Quick rack Poly bushed throughout, Group 1 bilstein rear shocks, Panhard rod, rear disc conversion and fly off handbrake. A works spec adjustable bias pedal box with remote dash adjuster has also been fitted.

Adding to the impressive spec are some very nice period parts and features such as Cibie Oscars and Sper Oscars, Works spotlamp bracket, genuine Ford Sport grille badge, Works instruments, Halda Twin Master trip meter, Butlers map light, genuine RS centre console, stainless gutter trims as original, Deep dish original Springalex Works steering wheel, RS recliner seats and drivers 4 point Luke harness and 6 point Safety Devices Cage. To finish the car off nicely RS alloys with 185/60 x 13" A509's tyres have been fitted.

The work was carried out in 2002 and the genuine Type 49 shell was stripped down to bare metal and painted Diamond White with blue stripes. This genuine AVO Mexico is very special and with such a strong following we expect these highly desirable cars to continue to rise in value. Outstanding.
