The Ford Escort MKIII RS1600i was introduced in September 1981 and production ceased in 1984 with 2600 selling in the U.K. Originally Ford only planned to build 5000 but the model sold very well and 8659 cars were built by 1984.
Ford used the 1597cc CVH engine with a five speed B5 gearbox. The RS1600i engine had great tuning potential and group A racing Escorts produced over 160bhp. With iron block, alloy cylinder head and the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection the standard engine had a maximum power of 115bhp at 6000rpm. With independent front and rear suspension, McPherson struts at the front and transverse arms on the rear, the RS1600i handled superbly and has become a real 80's icon. Ford originally quoted only 290 Caspian Blue MKIII RS1600's to be built and as a result very few are seen today. With the recent interest in 70's and 80's Ford's, examples like this have become very hard to find.
This example has been driven over 80 miles here. The car presents beautifully having being fully rebuilt in 2002. The bodywork and paint are in exceptional condition having benefitted from a bare metal re-paint. The interior looks superb and as original with no wear on prone areas such as the seat edge. The engine bay is nicely detailed and the car is good enough to show. Wheels are also in excellent re-furbished condition and car stands very well. On the road the car is a delight to drive and will be supplied with a full 12 months MOT, service and function check. The RS1600i is sold with original handbooks and service book, lots of MOT certificates and previous ownership information.
A stunning example.
