This genuine, original Fordson Van was first registered on the 5th October 1937 and there’s not much doubt that the light commercial van was put straight into work. These very nimble, highly desirable vans are becoming very scarce, the last one we owned was over ten years ago and survivors are quite difficult to come by these days. They were built between 1932 and 1937 supplied with a 933cc sidevalve engine and three speed gearbox and was essentially Fords Model Y Type in van format badged Fordson.
Having likely spent its early life as a workhorse, the Fordson was in need of restoration by the late 1980's and was laid up for many, many years. The then long-term owner eventually started a restoration that included the fabrication of a new wood frame, various new panels and by June 2006 the van was back on the road, re-painted, looking fresh and mechanically overhauled with an engine rebuild and custom-made stainless-steel exhaust.
The Fordson changed hands in 2010 and the new owner dressed down the van for a more period look. He removed the chrome bumpers as the van left the factory without, replaced the headlamps and although the Van restoration had been completed in 2006, it had spent two years standing again. In a light re-commission, the new owner removed the cylinder head and found the bores to be perfect and the cylinder head was re-fitted with a copper gasket.
In 2011 the owner completed the Tyne Tees Historic Commercial Run faultlessly and was regularly MOT tested. The Fordson has been covering light mileage over recent years and has arrived with us totally on the button and driving well. The engine is sweet and very healthy having covered low mileage since rebuild, the gearbox is lovely to use and this desirable, honest van presents well with nicely aged paintwork, a clean and tidy engine bay, excellent rear compartment and the seats and have a work life feel with a lovely patina. Still retaining its period registration mark ADP 230, this Fordson should prove an attractive proposition for shows, commercial events and ideal for business marketing and advertising.
