This is one of just 776 Jaguar E-Type Series II Roadsters built for the UK home market. Further to this, we are delighted to report the car is still in its factory colours with Jaguar Cream paintwork, Red upholstery and Black hood. This E-Type also retains its original engine and is a matching numbers car, even retaining its original registration mark RNC 9J. The car was supplied new by Parkers, despatched on the 5th May 1970 and was registered new in Manchester in 1971. The E-Type comes with a factory hard top, Heritage Certificate, restoration photo album detailing a late 1980's, early 1990's rebuild and a recent photo record and invoices for a £20,000 programme of work carried out in late 2015 taking the car back to a top class standard having spent many years garaged and unused since rebuild.
RNC 9J doesn't record many owners and we know in 1988 it changed hands and was in need of restoration work. We have a photo album showing many new major body panels such as main floors being replaced and the body being totally stripped back and rebuilt. The car was re-painted, some of the upholstery re-trimmed and a new hood fitted. The car was mechanically overhauled with new/re-conditioned brakes and suspension components and the engine was removed and rebuilt as required. The differential and rear cage were removed, dismantled and rebuilt and the car put back on the road in stunning condition. In 1998 the E-Type was sold and has since spent seventeen years in Cheshire. The long term owner only managed to cover around 1000 miles and the car spent most of its time garaged and not in use. In July 2015 the E-Type was put back on the road, MOT tested after various electrical works were carried out. The car then covered around 200 miles before going into a more substantial programme of work.
Having spent so long off the road since restoration some minor mechanical work was carried out. This included fitting new exhaust rubbers, replacement air filter rubbers, re-conditioning the inoperative rev counter, replacing faulty bonnet struts, re-conditioning the alternator, servicing the brakes including cleaning the callipers, replacing the leaking clutch slave cylinder and replacing the faulty ignition lock. The engine was checked over and 45psi was recorded at idle when warm and 60psi at 2000 rpm. A compression test revealed very good, healthy and even compression across the engine and the gearbox checked and reported to have excellent syncro's. The car was road tested and was confirmed to be in lovely driving order, in strong mechanical condition throughout and ready to use and enjoy with no major faults.
The bodywork and paintwork were untouched after 27 years since the major rebuild. The body appeared very straight but paintwork had aged, looked dull and there was evidence of touch up, presumably carried out when the car was marked in a tight garage. The underside was found to be structurally outstanding, as expected considering the car has new panels when rebuilt. Although the restoration was many years ago, the car had not been exposed to salt or bad weather, and therefore the car offered a fabulous base for a top class re-paint in order to give it the glass, gleaming finish a rare UK, matching numbers E-Type deserves. The car was stripped down to a bare shell, bumpers and light surrounds sent for re-chroming and the body shell under the paintwork was found in very good order. A decision was made to then take this car back to bare metal, revealing all and seeing the car in bare metal showed a truly superb body shell (photos with the car). The car was then prepared, primed, etch primed and re-painted in its correct original colour. The car was built up, re-fitted and the completed car is truly stunning with excellent straight panels, excellent gaps and shut lines. The engine bay was detailed, the bonnet underside prepared and re-painted, and boot floor/spare wheel well re-painted and the underside stripped and re-painted body colour.
Having had a top quality restoration, and now the late 2015 programme of work, this E-Type offers and excellent opportunity. The car has all the ingredients looked for in an E-Type. It retains factory specification, factory supplied major components and has the provenance of a low ownership, UK car that has never kept totally correct throughout. The car is strong mechanically, drives superbly and presents beautifully with stunning paintwork and bodywork and a lovely, clean interior that has beautifully aged red leather seats. The underside is structurally top class and the car is in a condition where it can be driven and enjoyed whether for serious long distance touring or just local weekend fun.
