Having being launched in 1962, the S'Type slotted into the Jaguar range between the MKII and MKX. Two XK engineered models were available, the 3.8 from launch, and the 3.4 from 1964. Derived from the MKII, the S'Type featured a longer, flatter roof line with a more upright rear window and a restyled rear end. The improved interior space and provided a more spacious and practical luggage compartment. The revised front-end styling comprised a new grill, cowled headlights, recessed spot lamps and wrap around flashers. Both 3.4 and 3.8 engines were shared with the MKII, as was the front suspension. However, independent rear suspensions (derived from the E-Type and MKX) by coil springs with a separate mounting frame gave the S'Type class-leading ride and handling characteristics and exceptional refinement. Both models were available with a four-speed manual gearbox, with optional overdrive and three speed Borg Warner automatic.
We are delighted to offer this 3.8 example with manual gearbox and overdrive onto the market. Interestingly, this example was not UK registered until the 19th July 1971 and was originally issued with a J (1971) registration. We are told the car was delivered new to Jersey and therefore not UK registered until 1971 when transferring to an owner in the UK. The Jaguar is finished in Opalescent Dark Green and has a lovely deep shine with high quality paintwork and smart chrome work. The interior is beautifully finished with stunning re-trimmed Beige leather and smart door cards and headlining. The woodwork is of a high quality and the car is comfortable, luxurious and very nicely finished. The bodywork is particularly good with excellent straight panels, excellent door gaps and the underside is structurally superb and very sound. This is a very well presented S'Type that will look fabulous on the showground and is ideal for regular use.
This car certainly does not disappoint with the excellent reputation for class leading ride and handling evident in this sharp, precise, perfectly set up example. The Jaguar starts up instantly, runs beautifully with very good oil pressure and performance from the 3.8 unit is very impressive. The four-speed gearbox is delightfully smooth, the overdrive comes in and out almost unnoticed and as it should, the car handles perfectly. This is a car that can be driven anywhere and feels strong, robust and has a real feel of quality and reliability throughout. This is a car that can really be used and is ideal for touring with quality, comfort and confidence.
