HWB 685J was manufactured on the 15th December 1970 and left the factory in Light Blue with Dark Blue leather. This Series I 2.8 was ordered with manual transmission and overdrive and today is totally standard, in original specification with matching numbers. The Jaguar was distributed by Ernest W Hatfield Ltd, Sheffield and the car had been based in Yorkshire from new until we sold the car for the first time to a regular customer in 2015. Subsequently, the car has become well known to us having sold the car again to another regular customer two years ago who has covered 1,000 faultless miles. The V5 records low ownership from new and the car has covered an ultra-low mileage of 46,000 with documentation to support this.
The Jaguar has come to us in beautiful original condition and from inspecting the car on one our ramps we can see the vehicle has had no welding work and is totally original underneath. This is incredibly rare to see, particularly on a car of this era that was prone to rust. From looking at the original underbody and general bodywork we can see this car has been garaged from new and we know from the history that the car has covered ultra-low mileage over the years. The panels are particularly straight and the Light Blue paintwork is of a lovely standard. The chrome work is bright, the general presentation of the car is excellent and the upholstery is delightful and original. The Dark Blue leather has aged very well with a lovely patina, carpets, dashboard, door panels and headlining are all in very good order as expected with just 46,000 miles.
Mechanically the Jaguar is strong with an excellent engine holding very good oil pressure. These rare 2.8 engines were known for weak pistons and we can confirm the engine has been stripped and pistons replaced with the recommend replacements. This was the weak point on these vehicles and most surviving examples have required this work. The four-speed gearbox is smooth, the overdrive comes in smoothly and performance is very impressive. The Jaguar handles well, brakes are efficient and whilst the car has covered very few miles, it has been superbly maintained and is on the button. As part of our preparation the car will be freshly serviced and supplied with a full 12 months MOT. Over the past 3 years the car has covered 2,000 miles and has had over £3000 of expenditure to include a new clutch, new engine and gearbox mounts, new starter motor, new petrol tank, various new ignition items and the carburettors rebuild. Recent cosmetic improvements include some engine bay detailing and re-chromed front grill.
HWB 685J comes with a comprehensive history and includes its original service book recording services at 1203 miles, 6998 miles and 10341 miles in 1972. All three services were carried out by Kennings Ltd in York. We also have the Shell Service Reports for these three services. From 1976 to 1983 a mileage log was kept recording fuel and oil consumption. 55 individual logs taking the mileage from 32250 to 41748 are recorded and we also have MOT certificates from 1983 and 1984 when the mileage was recorded at 42009. During the late 1980's and 1990's the Jaguar was dry stored off the road and in 2007 was MOT tested with 43564 miles. Recent mileage has been recorded by MOT certificates.
This lovely original car offers a wonderful opportunity as the rare, early Series I 2.8 Jaguars are difficult to find, especially in this condition. This is ideal for any Jaguar collection and low mileage examples like this are incredibly hard to find. Not only does this car have the desirable low mileage, the fact this vehicle has never required any welding work will certainly appeal to the Jaguar enthusiast.
