This fabulous value, excellent driving and sharply presented Jaguar XK120 Roadster is one of the first few hundred to be built. The car was manufactured on the 20th July 1950 and distributed by Hornburg, Los Angeles, California. The XK spent 39 years in the US before being shipped to the UK in 1989 where it was converted to right hand drive. From 1989 to 1992 the XK was based in Henley on Thames and in 1992 the car sold to one of the Directors of Imperial London Hotels Group who owned the car for 24 years. Since coming into the UK the XK has covered 12,000 miles and MOT records dating back to 1989 are with the car.
WXG 181 feels a very honest, usable XK120 that has delightfully aged having being very well preserved and carefully owned. The Gunmetal Grey paintwork has a deep finish and presents superbly. On very close inspection some minor cracks in the paintwork are evident, but they are small enough to leave alone, keeping the car as well aged, honest looking example that can be used, driven and enjoyed with confidence rather than worrying about stone chips. The bodywork is in excellent order with superb straight panels, the chrome work is smart and the underbody is exceptionally clean having had the underseal scrapped off the chassis, outriggers, boot floor and inner splash guards. The chassis rails, boot floor were sanded down, the suspension arms and leaf springs were prepared and treated. Two coats of seam sealer to the underside of the boot floor and fuel tank under tray were applied and two coats of stonechip underseal was applied to the chassis with three fine coats to under archers, with a final coat of gloss black applied underneath including suspension. The result is now a stunning, clean well presented underside. The work has been documented with photographic evidence. The upholstery looks very well with good quality older leather seats, smart door cards, carpets and dashboard. The aged, but still impressive interior enhances WXG 181 further and certainly adds to the overall feel of this beautiful aged, genuine car.
On the road this XK120 is just wonderful. On initial arrival road test the car truly out stripped expectations. Exceptional oil pressure, a superb, fit engine offering outstanding and impressive performance with an uncharacteristic super slick Moss gearbox offers a really fantastic driving experience. After just a few miles this is a car you want to take to France, or at least travel the UK and attend major events like Goodwood. It has that special feel that is just so hard to achieve. Spending £120,000 plus on restoring an XK cannot easily achieve this type of driver, this car just has that special something required and it just wants to be driven, enjoyed and used for long distance touring. If looking for a show winning XK, this isn't the car but if wanting the very best of an XK120 driving experience with a smart, sharp body with lovely older paintwork and an interior that suits an honest, original car, this should be seriously considered. With XK120 models looking impressive value next to the XK140 and XK150, such a top class driving car like this does look exceptional value and in future years should really push on value wise. This is a great buy, it just needs to be driven, and driven hard is probably the best way. This is the ultimate usable XK120, they are not all like this.
