This outstanding late Jaguar XK150 3.8 FHC was supplied new by Stubberfields Garages, St Leonard on Sea, Sussex in a special order colour of Pippen Red with black leather upholstery. PDY 840 was manufactured on the 10th June 1960 and was distributed by Henlys Limited, London and dispatched on the 24th June 1960. This is just one of only 656 cars produced in this spec and is the 100th from last made by Jaguar. This highly desirable 3.8 model XK150 was registered new in Towcester and was with just one owner until bereaved in 2003. PDY 840 was a remarkably well preserved car in original condition and prior to a detailed, sympathetic restoration in 2004; the XK was driven by the new owner some 50 miles home with a steady temperature and +40lbs oil pressure at 2500 RPM. The car has the original Moss close ration non-overdrive gearbox with 3.54:1 ratio Salisbury Thornton Axle giving a 'long legged' sporty drive and twin Stainless Steel exhaust system.
On inspection prior to restoration the whole under body and chassis were found to have been oil sprayed regularly accounting for the remarkably well preserved condition. The body was totally stripped down to bare metal and photographs are present showing the sensational rust free body shell right down to metal. The condition of the body is quite remarkable for an original UK car. The interior is beautifully original and did not require work and some of the chrome work was renewed. Mechanical work included some carburetion work, a new brake servo unit, ‘Kevlar' water hoses, renewed servo pipes, new clutch, clutch master cylinder, re-conditioned steering rack, new gear lever bushes, new rear axle bearings, seals, one half shaft, new over axle flexi pipe, rear brake callipers and handbrake mechanisms were cleaned, greased and re-shimmed and lock wired and new ‘Mintex' brake pads fitted.
PDY 840 has arrived with us in exceptional condition. The car is beautifully presented with a professional deep Pippen Red paint finish. The body is outstanding with excellent panel gaps and straight, original panels. The car has a stunning level of detail and the condition on close inspection confirms the car has been meticulously maintained and very carefully owned over the past forty two years. The upholstery has a very original feel with lovely aged leather and a delightful patina with smart carpets, door cards, dash and headlining. All the gauges on the dashboard are in lovely condition and the boot area is also smartly presented and consistent with the rest of the car. The engine bay is stunning with an incredibly clean and detailed engine. All ancillaries are nicely detailed and the bulkhead and inner wings and rust free and still retaining original paint in lovely order. The painted wire wheels and tyres are in excellent condition and the overall condition of this 3.8 XK is first class.
Driving the car is highly enjoyable with a strong powerful 3.8 unit holding very good oil pressure and offering superb acceleration. The engine pulls incredibly well through the gears and cruising at 60mph-70mph is comfortable with the Salisbury Thornton rear axle. The XK handles and brakes perfectly and offers a wonderful driving experience. The XK only covered a few thousand miles since 2004 and feels precise, sharp and very comfortable. PDY 840 is a highly sought after model that is an ideal collectors piece that can also be enjoyed and taken out for some long distance touring.
