This is such a special car, not only is it 1 of just 44 3.4 S spec FHC models ever built for the home market, this genuine UK car was owned by the famous Coombs & Sons (Guilford) in 1961, then in 1965 owned by Phil Henshall, the founder of the original XK Club who kept the car until 1976. The car was then exported to Australia and it stayed with just one owner for 35 years. An extensive history file keeps record of maintenance and restoration work in Australia where it was kept in regular use and probably the biggest test in almost sixty years was a 2,264 mile rally from Melbourne to Darwin involving around 45 hours of driving time. This was the XK register Commemorative run in 1996 which the car completed with ease. In 2013 the XK returned to the UK, was re-issued with its original registration mark 939 KPK and has had just the one owner since. This really is wonderful opportunity to purchase a genuine UK S spec XK that has true provenance and a well documented history that makes the car very unique and difficult to repeat.
During the 1960's, when owned by the founder of the XK Club, the car had to go back to Jaguar with major engine issues and at this point the engine was officially replaced with a correct 3.4 S engine with VS engine number. The car has matching numbers back to the late 1960's, overdrive and a very attractive period webasto sunroof that has been with the car for decades. The car is a fantastic all round package and has proven to be the absolute ultimate touring XK150 S. Since the cars serious Australian touring days, recent years have seen successful touring trips across North Wales and Anglesey, a tour of the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and Peak District. Whilst we cannot guarantee mileage, we do know from a 1976 MOT certificate that it was 58,399 miles prior to going to Australia and with a mileage now over 80,000, we can see it has covered over 20,000 miles in 40 years.
In recent years various major work has been done to the car. In 2011/2012 the engine was stripped down and rebuilt. It was treated to new pistons, rings, bearings, new valves and guides, timing chain, the block was milled, as was the manifold and a stainless steel exhaust pipe was fitted. A new radiator and hoses were also fitted to the car. In 2014/2015 the car was stripped of all chrome, glass and rubber, wings were removed as was the full interior and the car was treated to a full inside and out re-spray. The body was found to be in excellent order, clearly benefitting from a long term dry climate in Australia. Most rubber was replaced, bright work was re-chromed, wire wheels replaced, the engine bay detailed and the engine re-fitted with new mounts and various re-conditioned ancillaries. The XK today presents beautifully with lovely straight panels, excellent gaps and a deep paint finish with lovely bright work. The leather upholstery is just delightful and has aged beautifully. The seats and door cards are excellent, the headlining sharp, carpets new and the dashboard lovely. The underside is very well presented, as is the engine bay and the car has the looks of a very usable car that can be enjoyed and driven many miles. The engine is outstanding, super fit as expected having only covered a few thousand miles since rebuild. The Moss gearbox is exactly as expected and the car drives and handles superbly with a firm correct recently overhauled suspension and sharp efficient brakes. 939 KPK is a true drivers cars and has to be the ultimate touring XK FHC with all the right ingredients for taking it on the Continent from webasto roof to S spec strengths such as limited slip differential, triple carburettors and of course, the long term track record of being a successful, reliable long distance touring car. Finally, this XK150 S is quick, it sounds and performs as good as it looks and finding another one like this cannot be easy. The XK comes with a huge file of paperwork, copy of original 'buff' logbook and correct tool kit.
