1958 Jensen 541R

Jensen showcased an aluminium-bodied 541 at the 1953 London Motor Show but when production commenced in 1954, the body was made from fibreglass. The fibre glass body was mounted on a steel chassis, and the 541 was equipped with the 4 litre Austin engine with SU carburettors, four speed Moss manual transmission with optional Laycock de Normanville overdrive, independent front coil springs and live rear axle with semi-elliptic springs. Changes in 1957 specifically for the 541R model also included a top hinged boot lid and rack and pinion steering. It was designed to provide relaxed high speed comfort with lightweight construction, even the rear screen and rear side windows were made from Perspex.

This rare 541R has been off the road, kept in dry storage on behalf of the Chairman of a prominent Motor Group for many years. The car appears complete, with the interior partially stripped at present. We are offering the car onto the market for the first time in several decades and we have a number of purchase options available. The car can be sold in its current condition, re-fitted and running, roadworthy with MOT certificate or fully rebuilt so please contact us to discuss your interest. Very rarely do these cars come onto the market in this condition therefore offering a unique opportunity.

The car comes with paperwork dating back to 1970 when MOT tested with a recorded mileage of 78627 miles at a garage in Burton on Trent. In 1972 it was tested with a mileage of 6628 with N.R Brock Ltd in Doncaster suggesting the car may have covered over 25,000 miles in two years. In 1973, 1974, 1976 and 1977 it was tested at the same Garage in Doncaster with mileages recorded at 15175, 24490, 32430 and 38144 miles. The car then later came off the road for several years. From invoices and photos in the history file it appears to have been subject of a restoration in 1990 with invoices present for a re-trim and some mechanical work. The pictures show a freshly painted, beautifully re-chromed restored car. In 1990 it was MOT tested in Doncaster with 45563 miles and it appears the car was soon put back into long term storage with a mileage recorded at 46351. We collected the car in Doncaster where it has been for the past 47 years.

The Jensen body is in very good order with a nicely aged paint finish, chrome work is dull and faded so ideally requires re-chroming, all glass is in place and in good order. The underside of the car is structurally excellent and requires no welding work, the chassis is incredibly strong. The Jensen will require mechanically re-commissioning and we are currently in the process of getting the car running so we can then check the condition of the engine and gearbox. The leather seats have a very authentic look 29 years since re-trim, the dashboard is excellent and complete, door cards and headlining are tatty, and the carpets will need to be replaced. A brand-new wiring loom is with the car along with various other parts, an original owner's manual and a comprehensive history file.
