KDM 8K was in regular use up to 2012 and from 2008 to 2012, the MGB was covering around 500 miles per year. In 2011 the owner in Lancashire decided to take the MGB off the road and carry out a body restoration. The MG had been performing well and was mechanically sound, but the body was in need of work and the car was totally stripped down to the bare shell with glass removed. The restoration began in 2012 but the owner lost interest and the level of work required was fairly substantial. The MGB was parked in the garage untouched for one year and in 2013 the MGB came to us in part exchange.
We considered just moving the car on as a restoration project but the MG had some real potential having an excellent engine, nice registration mark and the fact we have our own bodyshop made this project viable. The MG was taken to Malton Coachworks for major bodywork and rather than repairing panels and cutting rust out, we decided to replace various panels with new. The MG was treated to new front wings, rear quarter panels and was fully prepared for a total re-paint. A photo record of the bodywork is with the car. The MG was then fitted with brand new front and rear bumpers, brand new chrome wire wheels and tyres, new grill and front and rear screen clips. The original seals were stripped, re-padded and covered with new Red leather, door cards were made in Red, a new carpet set fitted, new interior quarter panels fitted and a re-conditioned dashboard fitted with many new switches and gauges. The MG was beautifully finished to a very high standard with thousands of pounds worth of new parts.
The MG was mechanically overhauled and this included renewing the overdrive unit. The cylinder head was removed and valves and seats were re-faced, new inserts, stem seals and exhaust valves fitted and the cylinder head re-faced so the MG now runs on unleaded fuel. A new clutch plate, cover, thrust bearing and spigot bearing were fitted and the slave and master cylinder replaced. Brakes were overhauled with new brake shoes and cylinders, new flexi pipes were fitted, as were new calipers, pads and pins. New heater controls and box were fitted and the car fully serviced and MOT tested
On completion in 2014 the MGB sold to one of our long term customers in Hertfordshire. He has covered around 1000 faultless miles in the car and it performs superbly. The engine is superb holding excellent oil pressure, the four speed overdrive gearbox is effortless to use, the brakes, handling and steering all feel superb and the MGB has impressive performance. KDM 8K is in strong mechanical order and now almost two years since the bodywork and paintwork, it still presents beautifully. This is an ideal car for shows, events, local use or long distance touring. It's a fabulous BGT that can be used and enjoyed on a regular basis.
