1936 MG PB - 2017 Mille Miglia Entrant & Finisher

We are delighted to offer this very special car, a matching numbers MG PB that successfully completed the famous 1000 Mille Miglia in 2017. The car has arrived with us in exceptional condition with all of its Mille Miglia paperwork including letter of acceptance and race results , FIVA car, original ‘buff’ continuation logbook and copies of the its original 1930’s documentation. CLD 65 was delivered new and first registered on the 3rd March 1936 and spent its early life in Kent. Copies of the original guarantee card, copies of the documentation confirming the car was purchased new from the Great Portland St, London MG dealership and nil value receipts for rectifying oil leaks under warranty in June 1936 are also with the car. From the original continuation logbook we know the MG had left Kent for Hampshire by 1969 and after 1975 moved north to Nelson in Lancashire where it stayed until 2002. From 2002 to 2014 the MG PB was with one owner in Hertfordshire before being purchased by one of the UK’s pre war MG specialists.

The MG was restored around ten years ago and was taken to an exceptional standard both cosmetically and mechanically. Since rebuild the car has covered around 3000 miles including the faultless performance at the 2017 Mille Miglia. During restoration the engine was stripped and fully rebuilt to a higher performance specification with uprated modern pistons, new improved connecting rods, improved camshaft and steel crankshaft. The original engine was treated to new shells bearings and on completion of build up it was treated to a carb rebuild, fine tuned for the increased performance and also fitted with an uprated distributor. The MG was taken from being able to cruise at 65mph to 85mph and the bhp increased to around 55 making the car ideal for rallying and performance events.

In preparation for the Mille Miglia, in early 2017 further upgrades and maintenance work was carried. Two competition half shafts were fitted, an upgraded Wolseley differential with steel casing was installed, the propshaft was improved and strengthened including fitting modern universal joints, brake cables were renewed, brake shoes were renewed and assembled in the aluminium drums with steel linings, twin modern batteries were fitted with cut of switches and the honeycomb radiator was treated to a modern electric fan. Lighting was also improved with double filament sidelights that incorporate indicators and the original headlamps have been fitted with H4 bulbs. The PB covered some test miles before taking on the famous Italian endurance rally. Our MG performed faultlessly taking in the magical scenary of Italy, through the night at times from Brescia to Rome and back again. This car has now passed the endurance and reliability test and has proven to be eligible for this famous, sought after event.

CLD 65 has been kept in dry storage in Belgium since competing in 2017 and has arrived with us in the UK in first class condition. The MG is truly exceptional to drive and is seriously quick for a 1930's four cylinder MG. Its fantastic fun, offers impressive acceleration and loves to be taken high up the revs. The four speed gearbox is great to use and is quickly mastered, the PB handles superbly and just wants to be driven. Many years on since restoration the body is still first class, the MG hasn't had that much use, most of its mileage has been the 2017 preparation and event. The chassis is first class, as is the frame and the body is exceptional. The paint finish is of a very high standard with a lovely deep finish, chrome is superb, the car has full weather equipment in excellent order and the interior has beautifully aged with a delightful patina. The leather trim is stunning and looks authentic and original, the door cards are period and correct with MG logo present, and carpets are in good condition. The dashboard is excellent with all working gauges and instruments. This is a fantastic car and one that can apply for future high-profile events such as the Mille Miglia and rarely will an MG PB with this level of provenance come onto the market.
