We have known this lovely, usable MG TF 1250 since 2008 and have sold it to the previous four owners who have all been long term customers of ours. The car has a really interesting history having started life out in Nairobi, Kenya. The car was first registered in 1954 and it comes with a well-documented history outlining its early life in Kenya. We know from the file that the car changed hands twice in the 1960's and then again for a third time in 1974 to another resident of Nairobi.
In 1980 the Kenya based owner moved to the UK and officially exported the car. On arrival in the UK the MG was subject of a programme of restoration and by 1984 the car was registered and allocated the registration mark DSV 498. The car stayed with this owner until 1998, a total of 24 years. The TF was sold to an MG enthusiast in Reigate who kept the car ten years before part exchanging the car with us. Due to the time since restoration, the paintwork was beginning to look tired so at this point we stripped the car down, removed wings, trims and carried out a full professional re-spray. Photographs of the work are with the comprehensive history. Since 2009 the car has been thoroughly enjoyed by several regular customers and has covered almost 2000 faultless miles in this time.
The most recent owner bought the car from us in 2012 and has used the MG for the odd weekend run. The only improvements made to the car over the past four years are the fitting of a new water pump, ignition coil, ignition leads, distributor, uprated front crankshaft oil seal, rear crankshaft oil seal, sump gasket set, timing cover gasket, radiator top and bottom hose set and a new drive belt. The radiator was also removed, cleaned out and checked over and on completion of the work treated to fresh oil and a filter.
DSV 498 comes back to us in lovely, usable condition. The bodywork after seven years since re-paint is still impressive with a lovely deep shine, chrome work is smart and the car still rides on its original steel wheels. The MG comes with full weather equipment and the interior has nicely aged. The TF is great to drive with a strong, responsive 1250cc engine that offers a lovely exhaust note. The gearbox peforms well, there is evidence of slightly weak syncromesh on second gear, something that can be lived with for many more years or replaced by us if necessary, subject to sale price.
This is an MG TF 1250 ready to drive, use and enjoy. It starts on the button, performs superbly and is great fun to drive. The body is remarkably straight, the chassis excellent and has all the positives from being in a dry climate for much of its life. The car is structurally excellent and whilst not detailed and presented to win shows, it does present exceptionally well. DSV 498 comes with an excellent history file, previous Nairobi logbooks, restoration history, handbook and lots of previous UK MOT certificates.
