This MGB was the first production MGB GT V8 to be commissioned (the step before a car was Mounted on the Assembly line) and it is confirmed in terms of chassis number, it was the first car number of the production of MGB GT V8’s. Further to this interesting early MGB GT V8 history, our car still retains its original colour of Damask Red, original trim colour of Blue, original V8 engine and factory options of alloy wheels, overdrive and inertia reel belts are all still with the car. This incredibly early MG V8 was supplied new by Hartwells Garages Limited, Oxford and registered new YBW 50M in Oxfordshire.
This special MGB V8 spent its first year in Oxford and in 1974 made its way down to Devon where it spent most of its life. The car was discovered in 2007 having been barn stored for many years and found in completely original specification but requiring major work with a recorded mileage of 85,000. Over three years YBW 50M was completely rebuilt with Classics Monthly magazine covering the full restoration story. The body required significant restoration and new panels included sills and castle rails. The body was turned on its side, and the outer shell completely rebuilt as required and completely re-painted to an exceptionally high standard in the correct original colour of Damask Red. The engine was found to be seized and on strip down it was surprisingly found to be in pretty good, original condition. The engine was treated to higher compression pistons and new main and big end bearings. On completion of the V8 rebuild, the engine was re-fitted to the nicely prepared engine bay along with various new or re-conditioned ancillaries. The brakes, suspension, steering, cooling and fuel systems were overhauled as required, the interior completely re-trimmed in its correct colour and renewed brightwork, excellent original V8 alloys and new tyres finished off the restoration to a very high standard. According to the history file over £33,000 was spent on carrying out the restoration and a photographic record is also present.
Having spent 42 years in Devon, almost three years ago YBW 50M came to us from one of our regular, long term customers in Crediton, Devon who further enhanced the car with a brand new stainless steel exhaust system, new electronic fuel pump and various other detailed items. The MG sold immediately on arrival and then spent two years with a long term customer in Derby who changed the GT for a Roadster. Last year, we then sold the V8 for the second time, this time staying local with another long term customer, this one on the outskirts of York who has covered around 1000 faultless miles in the car. The MG is now making way for a collection of British Motorbikes. Since completion of the rebuild the car has covered 5000 miles and is offered onto the market in excellent condition. The bodywork is superb, the underneath body colour and structurally exceptional, chrome work is first class, as are the V8 wheels and the engine bay is very well presented. Having been professionally re-trimmed the upholstery is first class and the car presents as a sharp, correct, stunning example that is ready to drive and be enjoyed. On the road YBW 50M is everything you would hope for from an MG V8. Its powerful and super quick, the four speed gearbox is slick and the overdrive comes in and out smoothly, the handling and responsive braking are impressive and with a superb exhaust note and V8 burble this is a car you can drive and listen too with absolute pleasure. There is no doubt this is a very special car not only in terms of condition but provenance, original specification and of course being the first commissioned factory MGB GT V8.
