This is an excellent value, mechanically strong MGB GT capable of everyday use. FUW 145J comes with an exceptional history file and had just one lady owner for around 30 years. The long-term lady owner bought the MGB GT in June 1975 at four years old with 25000 miles from new. The MGB, finished in Blaze was sold by Carr Brothers in Purley, Surrey, and the 1975 bill of sale to the lady at her Mews address in Kensington, SW7 is still in the file.
The history makes for interesting reading as its long-term owner moved to South Africa in 1977. The MGB GT was then kept in her mothers' garage in the Surrey but would often be shipped to South Africa for her to us. All related South Africa customs paperwork is still with the car. MOT's from 1976 to 1980 show the mileage going up to 43742 and in 1980 the owner allowed her friend use of the car. By 1990 the MGB had covered 86654 and many invoices are on file for the car's maintenance and servicing throughout the 1970's and 1980's.
From 1990 to 2006 the MGB was unused and changed hands in 2006. From 2006 there are many invoices on file for re-commissioning and servicing, and the car was put back on the road again in largely original condition. Thousands of pounds were spent on the car mechanically and between 2006 and 2016 the MGB covered over 10,000 miles taking the mileage to 97000 miles. The MGB was clearly in regular use, and from the history file we can see it was maintained with no expense spared.
Some years back the most recent owner bought the MG, a highly skilled engineer with a collection of classic cars. He bought the MGB to be his daily driver and ensured the car was mechanically in superb condition. He rebuilt the engine and bored it to 18/60, the head was skimmed and ported, new larger valve seats double cut and new pistons, main and big end bearings. The engine was also treated to a new oil pump, new water pump and the engine was balanced so is lovely and free revving. The MG has also been treated to new radiator, new water pump, speedo cable and rebuilt wiper motor. The MGB has covered 100,000 miles and just a thousand or so since the engine rebuild. The car drives superbly and is ideal for regular use with absolute confidence.
The MGB presents a good user, it isn't going to win shows with its older paintwork, but the underneath is all sound, floors and castle rails are all good and the spring hangers great. The front inner wings are rust free; the bonnet is excellent but there is some rust on the tailgate. The last owner has provided a good spare which the next owner is welcome to have. The chrome work is not brilliant, the interior is tidy and presentable, and the car is perfectly fine kept as it is or can be cosmetically improved without major expense. The car has covered around 700 miles since a new set of tyres, is a brilliant driver, it feels quick, lots of fun and is a structurally sound car offering excellent value.
