This very desirable Tartan Red early pull handle MGB Roadster was built on 23rd-24th November 1964 for the North American export market. The MG was despatched on the 8th December and was supplied in Tartan Red with wire wheels and heater.
In 1995 the MG was brought back to the UK having being in Arizona for several years. On arrival in the UK the B was converted to right hand drive and onto a 12 volt system. The car was used on a regular basis until 2001 when it was put into dry storage until 2005. After 2005, almost £4000 was spent on a high quality re-paint that included some bodywork repairs. The MG was also treated to a new hood, new brake discs, wheel cylinders, brake master cylinder and anti-roll bar links. In 2010/2011 over £12000 was spent on the car, £8000 alone with one particular restoration company. The engine was stripped, new conrods fitted and a balanced and polished fast road cam fitted to further improve performance. The head was converted to run on unleaded and a re-conditioned four speed gearbox with overdrive fitted. Further new parts included engine and gearbox mountings, stainless steel exhaust, exhaust manifold, high torque starter, radiator, thermostat and housing, oil cooler, Magnetronic 25D ignition, air filters and carburettor rebuild kit. Cosmetic work included a new windscreen surround, new seats frames, foams and leather trim. New brake callipers, Gaz shock absorbers and tyres were also fitted to the car ensuring it was mechanically excellent and ready for long distance touring. Since this work the MG has covered 6000 miles. Further work in 2013 included new front dampers and king pin lower suspension arms and bushes. In total, over £18,000 has been spent on this perfectly reliable and strong car on various improvement, re-commissioning and restoration work.
The MG has come to us from Gateshead and has recently been used for long distance touring. Just days before arriving with us, the car toured in Scotland and performed faultlessly. The car is in outstanding mechanical condition and we can confirm the MG drives superbly. The highly tuned 1988cc engine performs superbly and is particularly quick. The uprated engine holds excellent oil pressure and sounds superb; the car also offers a fabulous sounding exhaust note. The gearbox is a delight to use with excellent syncro's on 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The overdrive comes in and out smoothly and the rear axle is quiet. The handling, braking and steering are excellent giving a top class MGB driving experience.
ECD 386C presents very well with high quality older paintwork that has still a lovely finish. The body is superb and structurally excellent requiring no work. Body panels are straight with nice shuts lines and the engine bay is beautifully presented with excellent, smart inner wings, bulkhead and clean engine unit with nicely detailed ancillaries. The chrome work is bright, wire wheels excellent and the hood in very good order. The interior is very clean with Black leather seats with Red piping, smart carpets, door cards and dashboard. The floors are painted body colour and are structurally excellent, as are the battery boxes and area behind the seats. This MG offers a great opportunity to purchase a highly desirable pull handle model MG with overdrive, wire wheels, desirable modifications and proven reliability for long distance touring. Not only does the car present beautifully, it is outstanding to drive, is mechanically strong and is absolutely wonderful on the road with enhanced performance and excellent handling.
