1960 Mercedes Benz 190SL

We are pleased to offer this very genuine, original RHD, matching numbers Mercedes Benz 190SL back onto the market having sold it 10 years ago to a retired engineer and college lecturer in South Wales. The car was registered new in Hertfordshire and from MOT certificates with the car, we know it was in London during 1973. The same MOT garage, Loudoun Motor Company Ltd also tested the 190SL in 1974, and notes with the history file tell us bodywork was subject of restoration work in 1976. In 1984 the engine was stripped down and rebuilt with new bearings, new pistons and the crankshaft re-ground as required. The cylinder head was treated to new valves, camshaft bearings were replaced as were ancillaries to include the starter motor, dynamo and carburettors. In 1985 having had various restoration work, the 190SL was MOT tested at an alternative London garage. From 1989 to 1991 the Mercedes Benz was in Oxfordshire before heading over to Northern Ireland in 1992 where it stayed for 17 years.

The Mercedes Benz came to us from Northern Ireland in 2009 and was subject of some light re-commissioning that included a brake overhaul, new radiator, re-conditioned water pump, rebuilt ball joints and a major service. We sold the car to its most recent owner who has covered just a few hundred miles in the car. It has been polished and maintained much more than driven over the past ten years and receipts total around £9,500 for improvements, £5000 of this in 2015 to include a brand new mohair hood, hood frame timbers, roof chrome trim, new fuel gauge and sender, a new fuel pump, housing and push rod, new reserve fuel tap, timing chain tensioner, centre track rod, rear brake shoes and adjusters and rear brake cylinders. More recently, in early 2019 the 190SL was treated to a new brake servo, master cylinder, all new gear change bushes and a used original ignition switch.

DSU 174 offers a wonderful opportunity as original RHD 190's are becoming scarce. With fully rebuilt examples now changing hands for figures between £175,000 and £250,000, this honest, very usable example looks incredible value. We are happy to supply this Mercedes Benz freshly serviced and MOT tested, and it can be driven and enjoyed without hesitation. The car drives well with a strong engine, smooth gearbox with notable benefits from the recently replaced gear change bushes. The 190SL holds the road well, brakes well and is a good, strong honest car. DSU 174 stands and presents well but on close inspection its clear the car was painted many, many years ago. The paintwork still has a bright gleam but there are the odd minor dents and paint reaction areas evident. The panels are nice and straight, the gaps very good and any paintwork blistering is relatively minor. It's a much older restoration and can be cherished and thoroughly enjoyed as it is or taken to the next level with further investment. The chrome work is bright but blemished in places, the interior is pleasant with good quality older carpets, the leather seats were re-connolised many years ago and the general upholstery condition fits with an older 1980's restoration. If you are looking for a sensibly priced UK RHD 190SL, or a good sound solid basis to take to the next level, this car is most certainly worth considering.
