This is one of those rare finds that we are just delighted to be able to offer onto the market. Our RHD Mercedes Benz 220S Ponton is a collector’s dream, a car in beautiful condition with outstanding history from new, one owner for 56 years from 1958 to 2014 and a genuine low mileage of just 76,000 from new. YUL 795 was first registered in the UK on 25th June 1958 but supplied on the 24th March 1958 to its owner of 56 years who in 1961 moved to Devon and set up a real estate construction company who are still in existence today. The two comprehensive original service books are still with the car, confirming the Mercedes Benz first service at 330 miles in Reims, France. The second service was carried out later in 1958 at 1266 miles in London and during the summer of 1958 it was serviced again at 2486 and 4929 miles. Later in 1958 the owner shipped the car for use in Lagos, Nigeria where it was serviced by Leventis Motors on the 19th September at 7573 miles, 9894 miles in December and a final service in Nigeria in June 1959 at 12498 miles.
By 1960 the cars first owner was back on UK soil and had the Mercedes serviced at 17524 miles in the August. In December 1961 Rogers' Garages (Paignton) Ltd took on maintenance with the service book stamped at 22596 and 27533 in May 1963. In September 1963 Mercedes Benz (GB) Ltd in Middlesex stamped the book at 29962 miles and the owners local garage Rogers' Garages (Paignton) Ltd serviced the Mercedes twenty-two times up to 72696 miles in 1973. Twenty-two services in just nine years shows remarkable upkeep and maintenance and in December 1973 Roger's Garages MOT tested the car at 73374 miles. From 1974 the Mercedes Benz was dry store garaged for sixteen years before being transported to Mercedes Benz main agents Rose & Young (Caterham) Ltd, Surrey in early 1990 for a restoration that cost over £12,000. A letter confirms after restoration the Mercedes Benz was to be stored in a newly built fire proofed garage as a collector's car for use on special occasions and in conjunction with motoring events, the Mercedes Club, concours and events of this type.
Invoices and paperwork from the Mercedes Benz main agents detail a strip down to bare metal, body restoration and top-class re-paint. Exterior brightwork was sent away for specialist re-chroming, rubbers and felts replaced and various new mouldings and trims fitted. Mechanically the Mercedes Benz was overhauled as required, all brake assemblies, hoses and cylinders were stripped and rebuilt, the servo rebuilt, and master cylinder overhauled. The suspension was treated to overhauled kingpins, upper and lower trunnions were re-conditioned and all worn bushes replaced. Front and rear shock absorbers were replaced, rear springs, dampers and rear control unit removed and re-fitted. The rear axle flange seal was replaced, the gearbox and clutch assembly removed prior to the installation of a new ring gear, clutch disc and pressure plate and the gearbox internals cleaned, reassembled and re-fitted. The dynamo was re-brushed, the starter motor rebuilt, a new steering coupling fitted to the lower column and with the engine bay stripped all heater ducts were repaired, the wiring overhauled as required and a new radiator and water pump and hoses fitted. The engine was examined, compressions checked, removal and cleaning of carburettors carried out and examination and adjustments of valve gear taken care of. Fuel lines were all cleaned out, the fuel pump operation checked, the ignition system overhauled, and the engine then treated to new plug, points, lubricants and then run in. After sixteen years off the road, the Mercedes Benz Ponton 220S was MOT tested at 73618 miles in August 1990.
From completion in 1990 the car was only very occasionally driven. In 2006 £1900 was spent on some light re-commissioning having covered just 700 miles in the sixteen years since restoration. MOT records show the mileage at 74323 in 2006, 74356 in 2008 and 74470 in 2009 before a further six years off the road. In 2015 the Ponton was tested at 74605 miles having changed ownership for the first time in 2014. In 2016 the car was purchased by one of our long-term customers, a classic car enthusiast and collector who is now downsizing his large collection of vehicles. YUL 795 comes to us in Yorkshire having spent time in France, Nigeria, the most of its life in Devon and most recently in Lincolnshire. The mileage is now almost 76,000 and the vehicle is just delightful, honest and has wonderful charm. The bodywork is superb and straight, the paintwork still gleams having recently had some remedial work and detail paintwork attention to ensure the car presents in showroom condition. The interior is stunning and largely original and the chrome work has recently been re-chromed and as result now presents in exceptional condition. Recent mechanical preparation also includes a full service, new front and rear wheel cylinders, re-lined front and rear brake shoes, rebuilt brake servo, re-conditioned fuel tank and new fuel pipes. This is a truly remarkable find, a car with true provenance, exceptional history, all original handbooks, low ownership, low mileage and it presents superbly as a very genuine, honest example that is somewhat unrepeatable with a highly original upholstery.
