This LHD Mercedes Benz 230SL Pagoda was first registered on 23rd March 1964 and is finished in Papyrus White with Dark Blue hard top, Navy soft top and Dark Blue (5300) upholstery. The Pagoda has spent most of its life in California, from the comprehensive history file with the car we know the SL was in the City of Costa Mesa, California during the 1970’s and changed hands by 1981 where it then spent 35 years with one owner in Fullerton, California. A service history is with the car detailing extensive maintenance over the 35 years of ownership and in 2016 the car was imported to the UK and has had one private owner.Since coming to the UK in 2016 it has been registered and allocated the registration mark TGU 512E and £4000 has been spent on obtaining an MOT test in November 2016 to include a SS exhaust system and some work to the braking system. Although the car has a current MOT, it is in need of re-commissioning work to include new shock absorbers, various new brake pipes, new front brake discs and pads and new front wheel bearings. This car can be treated as a light restoration project and will require some underside welding work. The SL engine and gearbox feel strong and in good working order, however please note are not original to the car, the 2.3 127 MB engine has come from a SEB Sedan at some point in the cars U.S history.
In terms of cosmetics, the paintwork does present poorly so would benefit from a re-paint. The exterior appears quite original, the Papyrus White paintwork is quite dull in areas but has aged well. The soft top hood ideally needs replacing and whilst the seats and carpets are in good condition, the dash board has some severe cracking, no doubt caused by years in the California sunshine. This is an ideal semi restoration project and if looking for a non pristine, usable Pagoda at a sensible price, this car does not have to have a full nut and bolt rebuild. The car runs, drives, but does need work as suggested above.
