This stunning Mercedes Benz 280SL has covered just 40,000 miles from new and comes with an exceptional history. This original low mileage car was supplied new by Mertrux, Mercedes Benz of Derby on 20th August 1984 and stayed with its first owner, a Company Director for 20 years. Over 20 years the Mercedes Benz covered 31,636 miles and was maintained by the supplying dealer Mertrux. The original service book records services by the supplying dealer at 825, 2491, 5276, 8957 and 10958. Further paperwork supports Mertrux servicing the car at 14,330, 16385, 17993 and 26,296 miles. In March 2004 the SL sold to the first owner's co-Director and he later sold the Mercedes to a fellow Mercedes Benz Owner's Club member. Further services are recorded at 34,046, 39281 and 40168 miles. To support the comprehensive service record we also have MOT certificates with car dating back to 5287 miles in 1987. MOT's with the recorded mileage at 5287, 8959, 10964, 12329, 14995, 17992, 21321, 23803, 26505, 29309, 29655, 30918, 31156, 31636, 34408, 34525, 34573, 36881, 37783, 39228, 39270, 39853 and 40088 in 2015 are with the car.
The fourth owner of the Mercedes was the Director of a Charity, a well-known lady Mercedes Benz enthusiast who covered relatively low annual mileage in the car and kept it until 2011. In 2011 the Mercedes Benz was in the hands of a collector and he attended various classic events such as Goodwood and as before and seen from the MOT mileages, the car was covering very low mileage each year. The SL was garaged in a dehumidified garage with a quilted cover protecting it and has been kept in outstanding condition by careful previous owners. Not only does condition and mileage show careful ownership, but the extensive service history, MOT certificates, original PDI and factory data card and tax discs display the type of car this is.
The SL was ordered new in Signal Red with Anthracite Black ‘Nappa' leather rather than the more common cloth or MB Tex interiors. The paintwork today is of a very high standard and the bodywork beautiful. The Mercedes Benz has clearly never suffered from corrosion problems having spent most of its life garaged and used as a second car. The SL still retains its unmarked 14" Baroque wheels with excellent Pirelli tyres, original factory hard top and tinted glass. The Black fabric soft top has been replaced as most have by now. The interior presents beautifully as expected with a low mileage vehicle and the boot area correct, the engine bay very clean, sharp and well presented.
On the road our SL is delightful. It holds excellent oil pressure, offers superb performance and both the engine and four speed automatic gearbox are in excellent condition. The SL brakes, steers and handles perfectly and is the ultimate long distance cruising roadster. It looks exceptional, drives correctly and finding ultra-low mileage examples like this with supporting history to warrant the mileage can be difficult to find within this price range.
