This is one of only 702 RHD specification Mercedes Benz 300SEL 6.3 V8 examples ever built. This large, impressive and powerful model boasted a fuel injected M100 V8 engine delivering around 250BHP, reputedly was capable of 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 137mph. The luxury saloon was equipped with a four speed automatic gearbox, limited slip differential, power steering, all round independent air suspension, four-wheel diss brakes and as result was an incredibly advanced, expensive, luxury car of its era.
This beautifully presented, restored example was supplied new by Thingwell Garage Limited in Cheshire and first serviced on the 2nd August 1971 at 484 miles. The supplying Mercedes Benz dealership later serviced the car again at 3104, 4899 and 10153 miles in 1972. All four services in the first year were carried out by the same technician at the Wirral based dealership. In 1973 Portman Garages Head Office in Salford serviced the Mercedes Benz at 17379 miles, and again at 33642, 39271 and 45218 miles in 1975.
There is no information throughout the 1980's and 1990's where it seemed to be in regular use (due to mileage covered) but by 2005 the Mercedes Benz had a recorded mileage of 70,070 miles and from the MOT details in the history, it seemed the car was in need of some serious attention, particularly to the bodywork. In 2012, a 1000 plus hour restoration began and the Mercedes was returned to an exceptional standard. The body was totally stripped down and restored as required with the engine removed, treated to various new panels to include outer sills and jacking points. The car was stripped back to bare metal, completely re-painted and then treated to £3500 of re-conditioned brightwork, £4400 of leather re-trimming work, new wood veneers, over £5,000 was spent on the air suspension system, wheels were re-conditioned and the brake overhauled. Once the work was completed, the Mercedes was MOT tested with the mileage recorded at 70,358.
Since completion of the restoration in 2014, the Mercedes Benz has covered less than 100 miles and whilst presenting in beautiful condition, it was recently in need of some re-commissioning work. The car has now completed a program of work costing in the region of £8,000 and work includes brand new front and rear brake discs and pads, handbrake shoes and springs, new exhaust rubbers, rebuilt sunroof motor, rebuilt window switches, new lower arm bump stops, new viscous fan unit, new steering pump belts, new alternator belt, new plug leads, distributor cap, oil and filter change, various re-wiring, new A/C reservoir pipe, new propshaft bolts, new front anti-roll bar bushes, wheel bearings adjusted and dash lights, interior lights and clock all made to work.
Now fully re-conditioned the Mercedes Benz 300SEL 6.3 can live up to its reputation as the true intercontinental express of its day. With enormous torque the Mercedes 6.3 is an addictively fast saloon, the air suspension gives a firm but comfortable ride and the car really sweeps through fast bends. Our car is truly superb on the road, has been subject of thousands of pounds worth of expenditure and with its stunning, restored body, excellent paintwork and chrome, beautifully presented upholstery, detailed engine bay and boot, this true iconic German V8 Saloon is an ideal car for long distance touring, regular, reliable and even daily use.
