This is a fabulous original car, a genuine Lowlight with just 60,800 miles recorded, with its past owner for over 30 years, still in its original colour and retaining its original upholstery and registration mark. It’s a true delight, a time warp and somewhat of an unrepeatable find. GFH 851 is a genuine home market car, built on the 16th September 1949 in Romain Green with Beige upholstery and sold new by Wicliffe Motor Company Limited, Stroud, Gloucestershire. A copy of the original buff logbook confirms the car stayed in Gloucestershire until at least the 1970’s. The first owner kept the Morris from 1949 to 1953 in Westbury on Severn and two owners followed in Gloucester from 1953 to 1971. In 1971 the Lowlight sold to a lady, also in Gloucester and by 1987 the car was in the North of England, Huddersfield.
In 1989 the most recent owner purchased GFH 851 with a mileage believed to be genuine of just over 40,000. Throughout the 1990's the Morris was used for family holidays, special occasions and in more recent years it has been used on the classic car show scene. We saw the car ourselves a few years back for a Morris Minor annual meet at Scampston, North Yorkshire where it had driven faultlessly over from Holmfirth. The car has been in fairly regular use, largely local hence keeping the mileage relatively low. We collected the car from its long term owners in Holmfirth and it was quite emotional as the car had really become part of the family after 30 years of enjoyment.
GFH 851 presents well with nice older paint, it is far from pristine but is clean, tidy and very well presented with no major issues. The body is lovely and straight, the underside structurally excellent and the odd minor blemishes reminds us of what a superb original car this is. The chrome work is bright, wheels are in lovely order and the engine bay unbelievably honest and original. The upholstery retains the cars original seats, headlining, door cards, handles and dashboard, the carpets have been replaced at some stage and everything appears to work correctly including the heater. On the road the Lowlight is a delight. The engine starts instantly, runs beautifully, sounds perfect and gear changes are smooth. GFH 851 drives very well indeed, its how they should be, never taken apart, always cherished and well maintained, a fabulous largely original and honest car. They don't come up like this often.
