1938 Peugeot 302 Airstream Saloon. Reg. No. YWG 285 - Chassis Number 776287 – Mileage 73705 Km. Introduced in 1936, the Peugeot 302 / 402 series had their design origins in the Chrysler Airflow salon launched in the mid 1930’s, whilst the Chrysler styling was too advanced for the then American tastes, the art deco styled Peugeot proving successful in Europe, and formed the basis of aerodynamic styling taken up by BMW, Fiat and other European manufacturers in the mid to late 1930’s, and which continued through in post war years with the smaller Peugeot 202. The chassis and engine of the 302 also formed the basis for the very successful Peugeot Darl ‘Mat coupes built by Peugeot and entered at Le Mans in 1937.
This is possibly one of the last Peugeot 302's produced and from the chassis number it is estimated to have been produced in March / April 1938. Our 302 was used regularly in France in recent years, it came to the UK in 2016 and went through an initial refurbishment at the time. The 302 retains a high degree of originality, with original 1758 cc OHV engine, the very original interior retaining the original carpets, mats, seats, panels and fittings. Last registered in Eastern France, and purchased in Paris as 9331 VG 02, it is now UK registered with a current V5C, further detail on the car's origin can be obtained by joining the UK Peugeot Owners Club.
The car when first in the UK, was stripped, undersealed, with all of the doors being rust proofed, the previous owner who has owned a number of Peugeot 302's continued with the work, it has been converted to run on one high capacity 12 volt battery which is fitted, the water pump was professionally rebuilt, with new parts supplied by Depanoto in France, the sump has been removed cleaned, repainted, with new gaskets fitted, the engine has been cleaned and repainted, with an original new old stock fuel pump fitted. The radiator was removed, cleaned, and a period pattern temperature gauge fitted. The brakes have been checked and adjusted as have the front wheel bearings, an oil change was carried out in the last year, with oil levels checked.
Since 2017, the Peugeot has attended rallies in Great Britain and France, and successfully completed the ever popular Fougeres Rally in May 2018. It is on the button and ready to use this Summer. This is probably the most original 302 for sale at present, benefitting from charming mellow appearance with restored mechanicals. It has been used regularly over the last year, with constant oil pressure and a reasonable cruising speed, the steering is very light, it starts on the button, has effective brakes and steering. It is rarer than its competitor the Citroen Traction 7C, and is a charming example of French aerodynamic styling from the mid 1930's.
It comes a digital folder containing original parts lists, original advertising brochures, technical information, parts can be obtained from Depanoto and Auto4A whose parts listed are in the file. A technical manual will be provided on sale.
