This 1964 Porsche 356SC Coupe is a US supplied left hand drive matching numbers car that has recently formed part of a large collection in Europe. The British enthusiast and collector has a wide range of top class historic vehicles across Europe in Holland, Italy and Switzerland. This true show car is one we know well and being the 356SC, it is arguably the most desirable model, top of the range in the 356 series having the 95hp engine and disc brakes both front and rear. This pristine car is in first class, show standard condition having recently had a program of work costing in excess of £60,000.
In 2004 the Porsche was sold by a private owner in the city of Pascagoula in the State of Mississippi. The Porsche was in strong mechanical condition, had recently been treated to a brand new clutch, new distributor and brake overhaul, and was sold to a UK based British Army Major. On retirement from the Armed Forces, the 356SC, now in South Wales was put through a sympathetic restoration. The car had been re-painted and re-trimmed in the US several years prior to being shipped into the UK and having an excellent strong engine and gearbox, it was mainly bodywork that required attention. The Porsche was UK registered and roadworthy soon after its arrival in 2004 and on the owner's retirement a couple of years later, it was taken off the road for some body renovation work. Sadly, due to other commitments, the Porsche was not used again and in 2016 after twelve years of ownership, the car came to us in North Yorkshire.
On arrival with us in 2016, we assessed the car and found it to be in very good mechanical order, needing some light re-commissioning. Engine compressions and oil pressure was checked and found to be excellent, the bodywork had over many years been kept up too and maintained when required but was found to be generally in quite poor condition. The interior had been trimmed many years previous in the US but was looking tired. We marketed the car and very quickly sold it to the most recent owner and agreed to carry out a body restoration, re-trim and mechanical overhaul as required. Over twelve months £60,000 of work was carried out taking this 356 to an exceptional standard and in order to achieve the best results possible, the car was taken back to the bare shell and treated to very expensive, brand new panels to ensure the car would present in top class condition for many years to come. Like with many largely original cars, previous repairs to the body were not of today's high standards so a decision was made to invest further into the body restoration to ensure the shell was in the very best condition possible on completion of the works.
The program of work began with the car being totally stripped down with all chrome, glass, lighting being removed. The paint was then removed from the entire shell and taken back to bare metal. The Porsche was then treated to complete door skins, rear quarter panels, front and rear wheel arch panels, front and rear floor pans, rear closing panels, front wing panels, steel bonnet, right and left nose panels, headlight bucket panels, battery box panels, rocker panel and longitudinal left hand and right hand side panels. The body was subject of a major rebuild and on completion, the outer, inner and underside of the shell were completely re-painted to an exceptionally high standard. All brightwork was re-chromed and the rebuilt and painted shell re-fitted with new glass, new front bumper guards, new lamps, badges, gaskets, window channels, striker plates, aluminium strips and all new rubber seals. On completion of this stage of work, the interior was treated to a top quality re-trim with exceptionally high quality leather, new headlining, correct, original square weave carpets and refurbished steering wheel at a cost of almost £10,000.
Having had the body, paint, chrome and interior completed, the mechanical re-commissioning was carried out. The Porsche was treated to brand new front and rear shock absorbers, front brake discs and pads, rear brake discs and pads, brake calipers were rebuilt, flexi pipes were replaced, a new master cylinder fitted and in order to cure oil leaks, the rocker cover gaskets, sump oil filter seal and tacho cable seal were all replaced. Further work included new fuel pipes, a wiper motor conversion, chrome wiper arms, wiper blades, new HT leads, distributor cap, spark plugs, condenser, sports coil, fresh oil and filter, new alternator belt, various switches, flasher units, fitting a Cat 1 alarm, a new set of tyres and upgrading the clock to 12v quartz.
Since completion the Porsche has had light, careful use on mainland Europe and has been meticulously detailed and kept in outstanding condition. This is without doubt the very best Porsche 356 we have offered onto the market and is finished in a truly stunning colour combination. The car is exceptional in every respect, as impressive on the underside as the top and on the road the car drives sensationally well. The 1600cc original engine unit runs perfectly, the four speed gearbox changes smoothly and with brand new brakes and new shock absorbers all round, it feels absolutely right on the road. This is a true collector's piece with the provenance of being a matching numbers car, finished in show standard condition and being one of the very late and most sought after models. Ideal for on the Continent touring and just beautiful in every respect.
