1954 Rolls Royce Silver Dawn Ex George Formby

We are delighted to once again offer this wonderful motor car onto the market. This magnificent Rolls Royce Silver Dawn was delivered by supplying agent Jack Barclay in September 1954 to George Formby of St Anne's on Sea in Lancashire. George Formby OBE was widely regarded as Britain's most well known and popular entertainer during World War II, best known for his musical talent with the banjo. In 1955 Mr Formby sold chassis number STH45 to a couple in London who remarkably owned the Rolls Royce for 53 years. In 1955 the Rolls Royce was registered at a Ltd Company Old Street, EC1 London address but actually spent the majority of the 53 year ownership in Christchurch, Dorset.

PGY 324 is a largely original, low mileage example with only 44,000 miles covered from new. The Rolls Royce still sports the combination of Midnight Blue over Shell Grey coachwork with wonderful, grey leather upholstery which it was originally ordered with. Rolls Royce specification sheets including chassis card and factory build sheets are with the comprehensive history confirming original order details. PGY 324 is complete with its original and still functioning radio, all of its tools which appear to have been rarely used and its original handbook still in lovely condition.

This beautifully presented example does not require any cosmetic improvement having been meticulously maintained and kept in the most stunning condition. The engine bay is exceptionally clean, the boot area equally as smart. The upholstery is delightful with leather and woodwork both in outstanding condition. Both paintwork and chrome gleam with the highest quality of finishes. MOT certificates show the Rolls Royce has been averaging around 300 miles per year during the most recent ownership and MOT records starting from 1981 are with the car providing evidence that the Rolls Royce has only covered 9,000 miles in the last 30 years. The history file contains correspondence and service invoices from Rolls Royce dealers Arnett of Bournemouth, Straight Eight (New Forest), Bentley Hampshire throughout the 1980's and 1990's.

Interestingly, at seventeen years old George Formby was based in our loclal town Norton, Malton as his father discouraged him from following his own stage career and instead sent him to Norton to become an apprentice jockey. When his father died in 1921 he went home for the funeral and never returned to the stables and thereon commenced his showbiz career. This information has been given by the National Horseracing Museum.
