KBF 970V was supplied new by Bird & Yates Ltd, Walsall Road, Cannock on the 1st February 1980 and the car has spent the majority of its life in the West Midlands. The supplying dealer serviced the Triumph six times in the first four years at 1002, 2865, 5859, 9115, 12018 and 14748 miles. The original Passport to service books comes with the car, along with handbook and Leyland Cars original wallet.
The Triumph has come to us from one of our regular customers in South Yorkshire but from the history we know the car was in Birmingham up to 2017. From MOT certificates with the car we can see it had a recorded mileage of 64897 back in 2002 and having been in regular but light use the mileage was 66933 in 2014 when it was taken off the road. In 2017, the Spitfire finally left the Midlands, heading for South Yorkshire where it was re-commissioned, and MOT tested at 66983 miles.
KBF 970V is a good honest example and appears to be a largely original, low mileage car. We would expect the mileage of 67,000 to be correct from the general condition, particularly the interior. Still in its original colour of Pageant Blue, the car stands well and the paint has a good finish with straight panels, good shut lines and a generally very good body. There is some evidence of minor blemishing on close inspection but certainly no serious or major issues. The trim is original and very good, bright work is of a good standard, as is the hood and the engine bay and boot are both present well with lots of originality. Our Spitfire is structurally excellent, the engine fit, strong and performs well and the four speed gearbox very smooth. KBF 970V drives well with impressive handling and is an ideal starter classic and would certainly suit regular all year-round use. This isn't a show winner, but a good, solid and reliable Spitfire that can be driven with confidence.
