This stunning Volvo 1800S Coupe was first registered on the 25th November 1963. The car was supplied new in White with Red trim and was allocated with the registration mark 58 XWC. The Volvo spent its early life owned by Harold Winter Warboys of Ilford who kept the car in ultra original condition, covering very low mileage until parting with the car at 84 years of age in 1984. We have MOT records from 1978 when the mileage recorded was just 34014. When sold in 1984, the mileage was recorded at 36780 and the new owner was only several miles away in Watford. MOT certificates show the Volvo in regular use right throughout its life until 2005 when it spent its longer period off the road, ten years. The Volvo has been kept ultra original, used on a regular basis for short journeys and when uncovered in 2015 after ten years off the road, a real time warp was revealed with a genuine mileage of 90,000.
58 XWC is quite possibly one of the most original, honest examples to survive. The car prior to 2015 had never been subject of major restoration work and was the perfect candidate for a programme of careful re-commissioning and cosmetic restoration work. First of all the body was fully checked over and found to be structurally excellent. Years of applied waxoyl was scraped off, the underside confirmed as totally solid and the body was then taken down to bare metal. All bright work was removed, glass was removed and the car prepared for a top class re-paint in its original colour. Chrome work was sent for re-plating, new roof gutter rail mouldings and front wing mouldings were purchased, as were new headlamp seals, front indicators, sidelights and various rubbers were replaced. On completion of the re-paint, bright work and glass were carefully re-fitted and the car, wheels were repainted and five new tyres fitted.
With the car now looking truly outstanding, a programme of mechanical work was required after ten years off the road. The radiator was removed and re-cored, the fuel tank tested and cleaned, thermostat replaced, bottom and top hoses replaced, starter motor replaced, speedo and rev counter sent for overhaul, the dynamo and regulator overhauled, exhaust system replaced and new axle straps fitted. The braking system fully re-commissioned with new discs, front and rear flexi hoses, brake calipers, brake pads, handbrake cable, wheel cylinders, brake master cylinder and rear brake shoes. Further work included a new clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, clutch spring, clutch flexi hose, wheel bearings and various other items. The Volvo was treated to fresh oil and filters, new ignition items and was then ready to be put through an MOT test. Following this work, the car was fitted with a Kenlowe fan with override switch and battery isolator switch. Invoices for the programme of work throughout 2015 total over £15,000 and are present with the vehicle history file along with photographs.
